Surgical Technologists Week WHEREAS, the profession of surgical technology was initially developed during World War II when there arose a critical need for assistance in the performing of surgical procedures; and WHEREAS, from this need, surgical technology has grown to meet the continual demand for well educated, highly skilled and versatile individuals to assist in the delivery of the highest quality of patient care; and WHEREAS, the Association of Surgical Technologists was officially incorporated as a nonprofit, educational association in 1969; and WHEREAS, the Associations foremost goals center around ensuring that surgical technologists, through accredited surgical technology programs, certification and continuing education requirements, continue to administer high quality care to the surgical patient; and WHEREAS, surgical technologists are recognized as integral members of the surgical team, working closely with the surgeon, anesthesiologist, and in alliance with the registered nurse, delivering direct patient care before and during the operative procedure: NOW, THEREFORE, I, Bob Riley, Governor of Alabama, do hereby proclaim September 20 through September 26, 2009, as Surgical Technologists Week in the State of Alabama.
