Earth Day WHEREAS, On April 22, 1970, 20 million people across America celebrated the first Earth Day. Earth Day is a time to think about how we can protect our planet. There are many ways to do so - recycling, reusing, conserving resources, and preventing pollution; and WHEREAS, In recognition of Earth Day, thousands of volunteers each year plant trees and community gardens, restore trails and wildlife habitats, and clean up Alabama beaches and park lands; and WHEREAS, Auntie Litter, Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting a healthy and clean environment; and WHEREAS, Knowing the necessity of taking care of our environment today in order to secure a better tomorrow, Auntie Litter, Inc. was founded on the belief that young people, their families, and educators working together can successfully clean up the earth – one community at a time; and WHEREAS, Auntie Litters 16th annual Earth Day Parade and Celebration will take place on Tuesday, April 22nd, in downtown Birmingham. The theme of this year’s celebration is “Take Pride Statewide:” NOW, THEREFORE, I, Bob Riley, Governor of Alabama, do hereby proclaim April 22, 2008, as Earth Day in the State of Alabama.
