Tartan Day
By the Governor of the State of Alabama
A Proclamation

March 21, 2008

WHEREAS, April 6, has special significance for all Americans of Scottish descent, because the Declaration of Arbroath, the Scottish Declaration of Independence, was signed on April 6, 1320, and the American Declaration of Independence was modeled on that inspirational document; and

WHEREAS, fifty-six of the signers of the United States Declaration of Independence, as well as nine of the Governors of the original thirteen colonies were of Scottish ancestry, and Scottish-Americans have played a critical role in the founding and success of our nation; and

WHEREAS, the State of Alabama recognizes the monumental achievements and invaluable contributions made by Scottish-Americans that have led to America's preeminence in the fields of science, technology, medicine, agriculture, government, politics, economics, architecture, literature, media, and visual and performing arts; and

WHEREAS, the State of Alabama commends the organizations throughout Alabama that honor Scottish heritage, traditions, culture and express our appreciation for the wonderful and rich contributions that have been made to our great state by those of Scottish heritage; and

WHEREAS, the United States Senate and House of Representatives have both passed resolutions establishing April 6 as "National Tartan Day;" and

WHEREAS, Tartan Day has become recognized internationally with five countries currently participating in its celebration with the Scottish-American community in Alabama proudly wearing their tartans in celebration; and

WHEREAS, the State of Alabama wishes to honor the contributions of Scots and Scottish-Alabamians and their contributions to our State and for their passion in keeping Scottish culture and history a vibrant part of Alabama's life:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Bob Riley, Governor of Alabama, do hereby proclaim April 6, 2008, as

Tartan Day

in the State of Alabama.

Given Under My Hand and the Great Seal of the Office of the Governor at the State Capitol in the City of Montgomery on the 21st day of March 2008.
