Sober Day USA, May 1, 2006 WHEREAS, the first Monday in May has been designated as Sober Day USA, A Day of Awareness in Alabama; and WHEREAS, across the country, alcohol and drug dependency is a major public health problem that affects Americans from all communities and of all ages, races and ethnic backgrounds; and WHEREAS, this disease needs to have the stigma associated with it removed through increased awareness, education and discussion; and WHEREAS, drug and alcohol dependency is a treatable disease, and seeking advanced treatment methods through medical research and other promising areas of discovery will be beneficial in the fight against it; and WHEREAS, it is vital that we work together to support events such as Sober Day USA, A day of Awareness in Alabama, in concerted effort to raise awareness and encourage an open and honest dialogue about this disease; and WHEREAS, we need to eliminate the diseases stigma in order to stem the dramatically increasing rate of alcohol and drug abuse, and prevent further alcohol and drug dependency deaths; NOW, THEREFORE, I, Bob Riley, Governor of Alabama, do hereby proclaim May 1, 2006, as Sober Day USA, A Day of Awareness in Alabama.
