November 20, 2008 Senate Vacancy Made Official; Governor Riley Moves Forward with Special Election Process MONTGOMERY - The vacancy in Alabamas 7th Senate District today was made official when Governor Bob Riley received a letter from Congressman-elect Parker Griffith, who previously held the seat, informing the Governor of his resignation from the State Senate. According to state law, the resignation triggers Governor Rileys authority to fill the vacancy. The Governors legal adviser is preparing a schedule for a special election, and will soon communicate with both political parties and seek approval from the U.S. Department of Justice before an election date is officially set. Ken Wallis, legal adviser to the Governor, said his office is moving forward to schedule a special election as soon as possible, but some time is required to make sure the election is carried out properly. We will work with both political parties and the Justice Department to set a date that meets all the necessary requirements, Wallis said. The most important thing is to ensure a free and fair election. That will require allowing enough time to satisfy the federal government that all the votes can be cast and counted, particularly absentee ballots from overseas military personnel. | |
