November 10, 2008 Evacuation Route Jointly Funded by Alabama and Florida is Completed FLOMATON - Governor Bob Riley and Transportation Director Joe McInnes will gather with local officials in Flomaton on Wednesday to celebrate the completion of a highway widening project jointly funded by governments in Alabama and Florida. Work that began late last year to four-lane a 14-mile stretch of Alabama 113 from Flomaton to Interstate 65 is being completed. The project provides a four-lane hurricane evacuation route from the Florida Panhandle and also an economic development boost to the town of Flomaton. Alabama committed up to $20 million to the project, the city of Flomaton and Escambia County, Alabama provided a total of $1 million, and Escambia County, Florida provided $4 million to the highway project. This is a great example of communities working together, across borderlines, to get something positive done for their citizens, said Governor Riley. Its a win-win for everybody. During hurricanes, people will have an easier time getting out of harms way, and this newly four-laned corridor will be more attractive to business and industry. | |
