November 07, 2008 Statement by Governor Riley Regarding Twinkle Andress Cavanaughs Concession in the PSC Presidency Race "Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh made the right decision for Alabamas taxpayers in conceding her race for President of the Public Service Commission. Once provisional ballots were counted, Ms. Cavanaugh might have been entitled to an automatic recount, which would have cost the taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars at a time of great budget difficulties for the state. It is refreshing to see a candidate put the publics interest ahead of personal interest.
Although there were several close races in this weeks election, none of them was close enough that there is any realistic chance that a recount could change the result. Given the states budgetary challenges, I hope all the other statewide candidates follow Ms. Cavanaughs example and not force the taxpayers to waste scarce dollars on a pointless recount." | |
